This installation uses handmade paper and animation to remix ancient Chinese characters, appropriated instructional materials, and diagrammatic family portraits. Through it, I re-enroll in my own early education to reconsider what it means to be a child. The character for “child” (子) appears in each word in the work, and its meaning changes with each sign it joins.
Work Sample #2
female + child = good
handmade paper (abaca and pigmented cotton), hidden collage, and animation projection
diptych: 15 × 44 inches
video: 06:47 run time (looping)
provided video documentation (excerpt): 01:18 min

Also from my thesis installation. 好, “good,” is written as a woman (女) beside a child (子). Collages of a boy and a girl are hidden between an abaca base sheet and a short-cotton blow-out, visible only when light passes through; an animation is projected across the suspended sheets. This is the layering my portfolio proposal builds on.

To Be Safe, in Two Tongues (collaboration with Yangbin Park)
handmade paper (pigmented abaca and cotton, cotton pulp paint), Joomchi, screenprint, and collage
18 × 24 inches
2025
——————————————
From a collaboration with papermaker-printmaker Yangbin Park on translation between our two languages. I made the seal script character for “safety” (安)—a woman under a roof—in handmade paper. Yangbin sewed on Joomchi paper carrying the Korean, and screenprinted a poem on hanji.
Work Sample #4
what a home is made of
handmade paper (pigmented abaca and cotton, flax pulp paint)
22 × 30 inches

家, “home,” is a pig (豕) under a roof (宀). Here, three versions of the boar character stand against four faint roof radicals, the parts of the word laid out but not yet put together.
Work Sample #5
Treasure Lid
handmade paper (pigmented abaca and cotton blend)
approx. 21.5 × 64 inches (irregular)
2026
——————————————
The entrance piece of my solo exhibition safer than words (Longwood University, 2026) is 宀, the Chinese roof radical, made in red handmade paper. It is not a word on its own, but nearly every character it tops has to do with shelter, such as “safety,” “home,” and “room.”
Work Sample #6
Edges Left Open
handmade paper (pigmented cotton and abaca blend, cotton, abaca, and flax pulp paint)
126 × 69 inches (twelve panels, tiled)
2026
——————————————
The largest piece from a period when my stencils, first cut to form Chinese characters, had stopped carrying words and become shapes. It wasn't planned as a twelve-sheet image. I formed four sheets, tiled them, and worked the seams with pulp paint, leaving open the edges that would meet paper I hadn't made yet. Then I added sheets until there were twelve.
